The former India captain Rahul Dravid says that it was a "tactical blunder" by Australia to drop off-spinner Nathan Lyon from the playing eleven of the second Test match being played at Hyderabad.
The off-spinner had conceded 215 runs in the first Test at Chennai where Indian spinners came good against the Aussies. But Nathan Lyon did claim the scalps of batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
For the second Test, left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty was picked instead of Lyon despite Australian spin bowling mentor Stuart Macgill’s preference to pick the off-spinner.
Doherty is inexperienced in the longer version of the game and has gone for plenty in the second Test so far without taking a single wicket.
The incompetence of Australian spinners has helped India take a commanding lead which makes the task difficult for the Aussie batsmen when they come out to bat in the second innings.
