NEWS India-West Indies ODI Series 2007>The return of Sourav Ganguly 12th Jan 2007 23.38 IST By Manish Kumar Once Sourav Ganguly was recalled to the Indian Test side, his return to the one-day squad was more than forthcoming. That is because Ganguly is almost double the player in ODI cricket than in the longer version of the game. In terms of number of centuries in ODIs, Ganguly is exceeded only by the great Sachin Tendulkar . Ganguly, along with Sachin, formed one of the most successful opening pair in ODIs, having amassed the highest number of century partnerships (16) for the first wicket. Together, they have scored 5,308 runs at an average of 45.37 and share the record for the highest first wicket partnership for India in an ODI – 258, against Kenya in 2001. Ganguly is the third player to cross 10,000 ODI runs, after Sachin and Inzamam-ul-Haq , and reached 6000, 7000, 8000 and 9000 ODI runs milestones in least number of matches played. In terms of statistics, Ganguly is India's most successful captain. He has more Test wins to his credit than any other Indian captain and is the only Indian captain to win both the One-Day and Test Series against Pakistan on their home turf. Ganguly holds the record, shared with Mahendra Dhoni , for the second highest score by an Indian cricketer in an ODI — 183, against Sri Lanka in the 1999 World Cup, but it is the highest by an Indian in World Cup cricket. Ganguly was involved in the first 300-run ODI partnership with Rahul Dravid and is the sixth on the all time list with 30 man of the match awards (Tendulkar leads with 52 awards in 369 matches). Ganguly is also the only player to win four consecutive man of the match awards in ODIs. Ganguly is not only India's most successful ODI captain but also the first Indian to score an ODI century against Australia in Australia. Ganguly has not only the most number of runs in one single edition of the Champions Trophy Tournament, but also the most number of centuries in one edition of the Champions Trophy Tournament. So, Ganguly’s return to the ODI squad – which was going nowhere but down – was more than forthcoming.
