NEWS I was made a scapegoat in the match-fixing episode: Malik14th May 2005 18.56 IST By Agencies Mourning that the match-fixing slur has overshadowed his cricketing prowess in public memory, former Pakistan captain Salim Malik claimed he was made a scapegoat in the entire episode by some vested interests. In a chat with Zee News, Malik -- presently serving a life ban for his alleged involvement in the match-fixing saga -- said the last five years have been harrowing time for him and his family. Claiming that the Justice MM Qayyum committee -- which probed the incident in Pakistan -- was under tremendous pressure, Malik said Justice Qayyum was approached many times by those people who made him a scapegoat and went scot-free. Stressing that cricket is his only skill, Malik regretted his career was cut short at his prime. Malik landed in trouble in a Test match against Australia in Karachi in 1994. Australians Shane Keith Warne , Mark Edward Waugh and Tim May pointed fingers at him alleging he had offered huge sums of money to them to under-perform in the match. Interestingly, Pakistan won this match by one wicket. Apart from Malik, Wasim Akram , Waqar Younis , Saeed Anwar , Mushtaq Ahmed , Ataur Rehman and Inzamam-ul-Haq 's roles were also probed in the inquiry investigating the allegations of match-fixing in Pakistan. Following the probe, Justice Qayyum recommended in his report that Akram should never ever be given any post of responsibility even though Akram was reinstated as captain of the team a few months later. Malik also accused the media of discriminating against him. The former batsman also rued that he was ignored for the BCCI Platinum Jubilee programe even though almost all the former Pakistan captains were invited for the occasion.
