Former captain Sourav Ganguly said India could have won the first match of the tri-series against Sri Lanka if the batsmen had scored a few more runs.

Ganguly, however, refused to attach much significance in India’s defeat in the lung opener saying it was only the first match of the season.

It was a close match. It would have been good if we had a few more runs on the board,” Ganguly said at his Kolkata residence before leaving for Chennai en route to Sri Lanka to take part in the tri-series.

But it was only the first match of the season and we still have three matches left,” he said short while before boarding an Indian airlines plane to Chennai, from where he would take a connecting flight to Colombo later.

Ganguly would join his teammates in Dambulla on Monday ahead of the third group league match against Sri Lanka on August 3.
