NEWS Tri-Nation Tournament in Sri Lanka>Sachin's best is yet to come: Gavaskar 11th Aug 2005 23.28 IST By Agencies Opining Sachin Tendulkar 's best is yet to come, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar said he won't be surprised if the master-blaster goes on to score 50 Test centuries. Throwing his weight behind the fellow Mumbaikar, who is out of action following an elbow surgery, Gavaskar -- himself the accumulator of most Test tons till Sachin dethroned him -- said, ''Sachin Tendulkar's best is yet to come. He will perform well. He is only 32 and he is at his peak now.'' The former captain, however, appeared upset over the recent poor performance of the Indian team in the Tri-Series in Sri Lanka. But, he said the Sri Lankans had a reason to win the matches. ``Their team is a good mixture of youth and experience. While at our end, we have just experience. They dropped Test players because they were not in form. We have also to think about the current form while considering the form of a player in the past,'' he suggested. Indian team played after a long break while the Lankans were fresh from their series victory against West Indies. Humidity in Sri Lanka was also energy sapping, he pointed out. Taking a dig at the selection committee, Gavaskar said, ''Selection committee should assess the performance of a player in crucial matches before taking him for the new one. He also regretted that many talented players do not get opportunity to play for the country.'' When asked about his views of new India coach Greg Chappell, Gavaskar felt attaching an Indian with him won't be a bad idea. 'It is Greg Chappell's first big assignment. It will take some time for him to understand the Indian psychology. For better results, an Indian should be appointed as an assistant coach to Greg Chappell. It will benefit the team a lot.'' Gavaskar refused to agree that standard of Mumbai players had gone down and said it was the other way round. ''In fact,'' he said ''standard of players from other states has gone up considerably.''
