NEWS If you want to retire, just go ahead and do it: Waugh15th May 2006 10.00 IST By Agencies Former captain Stephen Rodger Waugh has lashed out at those almost half a dozen Aussies who have created a hype about their retirement, saying they could avoid the fuss by just going ahead and doing it. Waugh was referring to Shane Keith Warne , Glenn Donald McGrath , Matthew Lawrence Hayden , Damien Richard Martyn , Stuart Charles Glyndwr Macgill and Justin Lee Langer , who have all spoken about retirement in recent past as the build up to the ashes series this November begins. “It’s different when you’re a captain compared to being a player. As captain, you get all the talk about who is going to be the next guy in charge,” Waugh was quoted as saying by The Sun Herald on Sunday. Waugh’s departure became the overriding theme of the summer but he believes the current crop of players might be more successful in avoiding the spotlight. “We were able to deal with that. Ricky Ponting was given the job almost straight away so that was taken care of. People had been talking about whether I was going to stop playing for so long and I wanted to put an end to it. With these guys, if a few of them are leaving, there won’t be just one bloke caught up in it. Ideally, you probably want to leave the game without all the fuss. That would be perfect, but it can’t work that way. It’s a high-profile sport. As a player, you can make the decision and let everyone know and then get on with it. Just go ahead and do it, if that’s your plan,” he said.
