NEWS Cricket World Cup 2007>Bevan still hopeful of World Cup recall 19th Sept 2006 19.27 IST By Agencies Still aspiring to make a comeback, former Australian ODI specialist Michael Gwyl Bevan says he is continuing to play domestic cricket in the hope that the selectors will recall him for next year's World Cup. With a batting average of over 53 Bevan would have been an obvious selection to any team in the world but the prolific middle-order bat, who single-handedly carved out several victories for the Aussies in his 10-year career, was dropped in 2004 from the national side.
"I understand that it's a real outside chance and it probably depends on how Australia performs and who's playing well down the middle order," Bevan told 'ABC Sport' in Sydney. The 36-year-old's optimism is, however, not oblivious to reality and Bevan says that more than the chances its his desire to be back in the squad which has helped him continue with the game. "So it's a very outside chance but something I want to be there for just in case," he said. Bevan was part of Australia's World Cup winning sides in 1999 and 2003 and was instrumental in the Aussies' triumph in both the editions. He was surprisingly not offered a contract in 2004 and has since been playing in the domestic circuit. The left-hander -- nicknamed The Terminator for playing match winning innings for the World Champions in tough situations -- has played 232 ODIs, scoring 6912 runs at an average of 53.58. The left-hander has 67 unbeaten knocks to his credit which has led to him being described as the best finisher in ODI cricket.
