NEWS Inzamam confident of being cleared of ball-tampering charge24th Sept 2006 19.16 IST By Agencies Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq today left for London to attend the International Cricket Council hearing, amid speculation that he may be cleared of ball-tampering charge but handed out "some punishment" for bringing the game into disrepute. Inzamam presented a straight bat to most of the queries thrown at him by reporters in Karachi but said he was keen to finish off the issue and concentrate on next month's Champions Trophy in India. The Pakistan captain was charged with tampering the ball and bringing the game into disrepute during the Oval Test against England last month after the Pakistanis refused to carry on play in protest over the decision of umpires Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove to penalise them five runs. PCB sources said Inzamam and the Board were mentally prepared to accept some punishment on charges of bringing the game into disrepute but not for ball tampering. "The indications are that the ICC will drop the ball tampering charges but ban him for the second more serious charge. But an appeal should ensure he plays in the Champions Trophy," a Board source said. Inzamam will be joined by lawyer Ahmed Hussain, coach Bob Woolmer and Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board Shaharyar Khan for the hearing. The ICC has said that the presence of former manager Zaheer Abbas and players Umar Gul and Danish Kaneria was not required for the hearing and written statements from them would do. The 36-year-old Inzamam had yesterday visited the headquarters of 'Tableegi Jamaat', the religious organisation he follows, at Raiwand where special prayers were held for his exoneration. Inzamam has become a "born-again Muslim" and attends religious ceremonies regularly in Raiwand, as do other Pakistan players.
