Former Australian captain Stephen Rodger Waugh has asked his successor Ricky Thomas Ponting to attack the ego of his English counterpart Andrew Flintoff , whose power batting can turn a game.

"Being captain makes him the key target for the Aussies, who will endeavour to erode his impact by attacking him in the belief and its outcome will mirror on those in his team," Waugh said.

"Bombard him with short stuff and prey on his ego wanting to dominate and assume the high ground," he was quoted as saying by the 'Herald Sun'.

Waugh, who led Australia through two winning Ashes campaigns and had a remarkable 71.93 per cent winning record during his career as Test skipper, said the Australians should starve Flintoff of boundaries.

"Then, if he gets in, stop his boundary hitting by starving him of the strike and having in-out field placements."
