Poor technique, improper selection responsible for poor show: Azhar

Lack of aggression, poor technique and improper team selection have led to India's pathetic show in South Africa, according to former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin .

"We need to be aggressive. At the same time, the opening partnership is crucial. Good opening stands are not happening," Azhar told mediapersons in Kolkata.

"It is a combination of poor technique and improper selection that is responsible for the below par showing. Also they are not dominating the bowlers. They need to outthink them," he said.

Regarded as one of the most gifted wristy strokemakers in the country during his playing days, Azhar said that the Indians could get out of the rut if they fielded the right combination.

"Put new players on the job as they have a lot to prove. See Dinesh Kaarthick . He may have not scored too many runs in South Africa. But see his aggression," he said.

He underscored that with Yuvraj Singh ruled out of action, India should have persisted with Mohammad Kaif .

"Kaif should have been there. The team needs to persist with him," he said.

Asked about coach Greg Chappell's tendency to experiment, Azhar replied, "Experiments are good when the team is doing well. But when the team is not doing well, then your best five batsmen should bat at the top".

On Sourav Ganguly 's 83 on the opening day of the warm-up game, Azhar said "I have not seen how he batted yesterday. But it is good for him that he has gone and got runs. Others who were supposed to perform did not."

He refused to hazard a guess on whether Ganguly's inclusion would cause a turnaround in India's fortunes.

"That will depend on the performance of the team and the nature of wickets," he said.

Former South African great Barry Richards said that Ganguly, being a left-hander, would be at an advantage. "South African bowlers like Makhaya Ntini do not like bowling to left handers as much as they like to have a go at right handers".
