England survived another mini collapse to beat a plucky Canada by 51 runs on Sunday in a World Cup match overshadowed by Andrew Flintoff's suspension for a drunken night out.
England posted 279/6 after being sent into bat by Canada at the Beausejour Cricket Ground at Gros Islet, in St. Lucia. After an early wobble, Canada rallied to post the competitive total of 228/7, highlighted by Ashif Mulla's 58, as England struggled to bowl it out.
It was Canada's highest total in 11 World Cup matches.
Canada was 35/3 by the 11th over and 64/4 seven overs later before Mulla scored a personal best score, including seven fours and a six off Paul Collingwood over the roof of the midwicket stand.
His fifth-wicket stand with Abdool Samad contributed 96 runs. They fell within the space of four balls - Mulla stumped and Samad trapped lbw by Monty Panesar.
England dropped Flintoff for disciplinary reasons.
Despite the controversy, England openers Michael Vaughan (45) and Ed Joyce put on 101 and the English were coasting until losing three wickets for eight runs in the middle.
Sunil Dhaniram, a 38-year-old forklift driver, dismissed Joyce and then removed Ian Bell (28) and Kevin Pietersen (5) in the same over in an 11-ball sequence that netted three wickets as England slipped to 161/4.
Collingwood (62) combined with Flintoff's replacement, Ravi Bopara (29), for an 81-run fifth-wicket stand. Bopara also took 2/43.
England must beat Kenya in its last Group C match to ensure it qualifies for the second round for the first time at a World Cup since 1996. |
