Uncertainty looms over pacer Stephen Harmison's chances of playing against India in the upcoming Test series as the fast bowler is to undergo a "non-serious hernia" surgery.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Tuesday announced that the Durham bowler would go under the knife, but the date is yet to be decided.

However, an ECB spokesman said Harmison's bowling remained unaffected as of now.

"Stephen Harmison has a non-series hernia that will require surgery at some stage. It is not currently affecting his bowling and the timing of surgery will be decided by the ECB medical team," the spokesman said in London.

England's first Test against India starts at Lord's on July 19.
