However, none of the batsmen apart from Dhoni and Laxman (39) displayed the willingness to stay at the wicket.

Dhoni and Laxman put on 86 runs for their sixth wicket stand and defied England for 118 minutes.

However, once Laxman was bowled by Tremlett, half an hour after Lunch, wickets tumbled quickly and defeat stared at India in the face.

Dhoni then took the attack to the England bowlers, posting his fifth Test half-century, and taking as much strike as possible to shield the tail-end batsmen.

Laxman’s dismissal prompted a small collapse as India slumped to 263/9. Sidebottom trapped Anil Kumble leg before wicket, Tremlett had Zaheer Khan caught behind by Matt Prior, and Panesar bowled Rudra Pratap Singh.

England required one wicket for victory after reducing India to 282/9 but that was not to be as the match was abandoned an hour after Tea.

Kevin Pietersen was adjudged the Man of the Match for his second innings knock of 134.

With the series level 0-0, the second Test starts at Nottingham on Friday.
