"I have been very fortunate to have played in such a successful era and with such a great group of players. I feel very fortunate to be acknowledged in this way," Gilchrist, who was part of three World Cup winning sides, added.
Test-wicket World record holder Shane Warne comes at number four with nine percent of votes and is followed by Michael Bevan (7), Dean Jones (5), Allan Border (4) Mark Waugh (2) Craig McDermott (1) and Andrew Symonds (1).
The player vote was conducted as part of the celebration of one-day cricket event held in February this year when Australia's greatest ever ODI team was also announced.
James Sutherland, Cricket Australia CEO paid rich tribute to the flamboyant wicket-keeper batsman.
"Australian cricket congratulates Adam Gilchrist on being named this country's best-ever one-day international player," Sutherland said.
"Recognition by his peers is a fitting accolade for a player that has performed at an exceptional level for the past decade. Adam has thrilled and inspired Australian cricket fans with his attacking batting, slick glove work, positive attitude and sportsmanship." |
