Former India fast bowler and ICC Match Referee Javagal Srinath today highlighted the need for a sports medicine centre to address the problems of the country's players.
"There is an urgent need for a sophisticated, full-fledged sports medicine centre in the country to look into the problems of the players", he said after laying the foundation stone of "Indoor Sports Complex" of Manipal University in Mangalore.
There should be a Sports Medicine Complex on the lines of the one in South Africa. At present there is no such sports medicine centre in the country and players have to go abroad for treatment of any kind of sports-related injuries, he said.
He said in 1996 he had to go to South Africa for his leg ligament treatment while Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar had to rush to England for his back injury, he said.
"Sports Medicine Centre therefore is the need of the hour and Universities should take the initiative to start courses on sports medicine", Srinath said.
The Health Institutions should also come forward to set up sports medicine centres, he said.
Later speaking to reporters, Srinath described the current Indian prodigy Ishant Sharma as "the best bowler in the world. "Ishant is more than a promising prospect for the country," he said.
