Kaneria contemplating career in Pakistan team

The selectors and some officials also believe that Kaneria has struggled for form in recent Test matches because of his over exposure in county cricket where he has become a defensive bowler.

Kaneria's new two-year deal with Essex is estimated to be around 80,000 pounds per season, which is a lot of money in Pakistani rupees.

Pakistan has only five or six Tests lined up this year against Australia and India and if the Australians skip the tour, it is bound to affect Kaneria's earnings despite getting a monthly retainer of around 125,000 rupees from the Board.

"He is thinking about asking for an assurance from the Board about playing county cricket and also to be considered seriously for one-day internationals before committing himself to the Australia Test matches," one source said.

Sources say the Board was aware that players, who have not been signed to play in the cash rich IPL are disappointed and the PCB was holding negotiations with various sponsors to launch Pakistan edition of the Indian Premier League.

"The Board is trying hard to launch its domestic premier league as it is also worried with the influx of players to the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) in recent weeks," one source said.

The ICL has already signed up some 16 players from Pakistan for its next edition, starting in March, while only six players were snapped by the franchised teams in the IPL.
