 Marlon Samuels charged over match-fixing allegations

West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels has been charged with misconduct after an internal investigation by the WICB into bribery and match-fixing allegations against him.
"He has been charged and the matter referred to the disciplinary committee," West Indies Cricket Board spokesman Tony Deyal said.
The Jamaican batsman was suspected of playing a part in fixing the first One-Day International against India in Nagpur on January 21, 2007. The allegations led to the ICC asking the WICB to conduct an investigation.
The investigation, carried out by Jamaican attorney Derek Jones, presented a report to the WICB meeting in Antigua last weekend recommending the charge, caribbeancricket.com reported.
Excerpts of what appears to be a telephone conversation between Samuels and alleged bookie Mukesh Kochchar have been posted on the Internet, detailing vital match information being leaked by the batsman.
According to Deyal, the WICB's code of ethics and disciplinary committee will conduct a hearing very soon.
The committee includes two former players -- Courtney Walsh and Richie Richardson.
"We are working on getting copies of all the documents to the committee so they can read them and call a hearing," Deyal said.
The charge caps an unhappy week for Samuels, who was recently suspended from bowling in international cricket after independent analysis of his action revealed his off-break and fast deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under regulations. |
