Michael Clarke pipped Michael Hussey and stepped into Adam Gilchrist's shoes as Australia today named him the vice captain of the Test squad for the West Indies tour beginning in May.
The selectors announced a 15-member squad for the three-Test series, inducting the spin twin of Stuart MacGill and Beau Casson and in-form batsman Simon Katich in the squad.
They also named a 14-member ODI side for the five one dayers they would play in the Caribbeans. Uncapped David Hussey, younger brother of Hussey, made it to the list.
Chairman of the national selectors Andrew Hilditch said Hussey too was considered for the Test vice captain's post before the job went to Clarke.
"With Adam Gilchrist retiring after a stellar Australian career we have identified the need to look towards the future. While we had some very strong candidates within the current team, including those of the calibre of Michael Hussey, we had no hesitation in recommending Michael Clarke for the position," Hilditch said in Melbourne.
"We were thrilled with his performances as captain during the two KFC Twenty20 International games this summer and believe he has outstanding leadership credentials," he added.
On having two spinners for the Test component of the West Indies tour, Hilditch said, "We have recalled Stuart MacGill after his recovery from injury. We think he will play an important role during the series and believe a player with 200 Test wickets will have a significant impact.
"We have also taken the opportunity to take a young spinner and by far the best performed of these during the Australian summer has been Beau Casson," he reasoned. |
