Gilchrist destroys Mumbai Indians with fastest IPL hundred

Earlier, Mumbai Indians put up yet another poor batting display and were restricted to a meagre 154/7.
Put in to bat, the home team, without the services of their injured captain Sachin Tendulkar for the fourth match running as well as the suspended Harbhajan Singh, could not recover well from a poor start of 18/2.
Pollock, named to lead the team, provided the early spark by making a run-a-ball 31.
Nayar (34 in 19 balls with three sixes and one four), and Dwayne Bravo (34 in 20 balls with three fours and one six) made a late charge, but their efforts were not enough to provide the team with a challenging total.
The Mumbai Indians started off with a flourish when Luke Ronchi flicked the first ball of the match from Rudra Pratap Singh to the fine leg fence for a boundary. He then followed it up with two more boundaries in the second over bowled by Nuwan Zoysa.
However, Ronchi played a horrible shot in the next over to script his own downfall when he gave slip catching practice to Laxman at first slip off R P Singh to be dismissed for 13, which came of 11 balls and had three hits to the fence. Mumbai Indians were 15/1 in the third over at that time.
Young Mumbai Ranji batsman Ajinkya Rahane playing his first match of the IPL, also did not last long being dismissed without opening his account when he trying to clear the square leg fence ended up giving a tame catch to Pragyan Ojha at the square leg fence off Sanjay Bangar.
Robin Uthappa the next man in then hit a clean straight shot off Shahid Afridi only to fall the next ball as he tried to cut Afridi who pushed the ball through.
The ball took Uthappa?s bat?s edge through to keeper Gilchrist. Uthappa made six and Mumbai Indians were left in all sorts of problems at 27/3 in the sixth over. |
