After Indian debacle at the world cup, BCCI had competition as Subhash Chandra, the head of the Essel Group, which also owns Zee Television, announced his intention to set up an unofficial cricket series called the Indian Cricket League.
Brian Lara became the first big-name signing for the Indian Cricket League, which announced that it had also contracted former Indian all-rounder Madan Lal to coach its Delhi team and Balwinder Singh Sandhu as director of academies.
Meanwhile, the BCCI got into the act by saying that players signing up with the Indian Cricket League (ICL) would be banned for life.
The Indian Cricket League was officially launched in Mumbai on August 20. As many as 44 Indian cricketers who had signed with the league were assembled at a press conference where Kapil Dev, the chairman of the ICL's executive board made an announcement regarding the league's launch.
As the year came to the end, Chennai Superstars won the inaugural ICL tournament, beating Chandigarh Lions by 12 runs in Panchkula and won the prize money of a million dollars.
