BCCI had its hands full, what with ICL setting itself up in competition, despite Chappell resigning as coach walking off into the sunset, as it were, soon after the World Cup debacle.
First it grandiosely announced the appointment of Graham Ford as the Indian Cricket coach for a one-year term. He was, they said, chosen over former England off-spinner John Emburey. But Ford apparently had not said a formal yes when BCCI went public and he quietly turned down the offer.
After many months, just before the team took off for Australia, India finally had a new coach in Gary Kirsten, the former South Africa batsman who signed a two-year deal to coach the Indian national team. He will start work on March 1, 2008, almost a year after his predecessor, Chappell, resigned from the post.
Vengsarkar continued to cause the board considerable consternation as he continued to write a column for print media despite clear board instructions to the contrary and then threw a right royal fit when he was asked by the board to desist. It would cost him lakhs as a loss, he claimed, while the hapless board rushed to placate him. |
