Sachin Tendulkar - still at the pinnacle of his career
12th Mar 2008 23:55 IST Manish Kumar
The sheer arrogance of his shots seemed to demoralise the Lankans, and by the time Muttiah Muralitharan dismissed Tendulkar, India were only 60 runs away from victory.
But Tendulkar kept his best for the World Champions Australia and scored his first ODI century on Australian soil by amassing 117 runs in the first final at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Tendulkar followed it up with another gem of an innings of 91 in the second final at the Brisbane Cricket Ground.
The two knocks laid the foundation for India’s victory in these matches and ensured there would be no need for the third final to be played. And Tendulkar helped India create history, as this was India’s first-ever tournament win in a Tri-Series in Australia.
Tendulkar’s match-winning knocks also helped him displace Australian captain Ricky Ponting from the top spot in the ICC’s ODI rankings for batsmen.
This was Tendulkar’s first time atop the rankings since August 2004 and it proves that he is still the best and still at the pinnacle of his career. |
