Holland’s 221-run drubbing at the hands of the Proteas may have set the record books tumbling but it would have sent shivers down the spine of the rest of the teams competing in the ninth edition of the World Cup.
The South African captain Graeme Smith had much to smile about as he applauded his teammates for their clinical performance on the field.
‘Most of the guys performed well. It will give the team immense confidence for the rest of the matches in the tournament. Barring the first 5 overs, we played well throughout the match,’ he said.
He also went on to say that Makhaya Ntini’s return to the squad would further strengthen the side.
‘Ntini will be a part of the team from the next game onwards. When he comes back, he will be up for selection. His return will surely benefit the side even more,’ the proud captain added.
The mood was not really upbeat in the Dutch camp and the captain Luuk van Troost looked overwhelmed by South Africa’s onslaught.
‘It was definitely not our day in the field. Barring the first five overs of the match, nothing really went right for us,’ he said.
Troost said that his team must take positives out of the game and perform well in the next two matches of the group stage.
‘We have to extract a few positives out of the game. Ryan ten Doeschate is a wonderful player and we must look to perform like he did,’ he added.
Man of the match Herschelle Gibbs was beaming after his record of six sixes in a single over. He went a step further and added ‘It must have been something in my drink last night. I didn’t realise what was about to happen till I hit the fourth ball out of the park.’ |
