I am desperate to play for England: Trescothick

Marcus Trescothick has said, he was desperate to resume his international career but not without being doubly certain that he could complete an overseas tour.

Trescothick, who pulled out of England's tour of India and then Australia before the Ashes last year citing personal problems, is recovering under the guidance of a specialist for a stress-related illness.

"Of course I am desperate to play for England again, but it wouldn't be fair to anyone if I attempted to do so again without being doubly certain that I could complete an overseas tour," the top English batsman said.

"I wouldn't have gone to Australia if I hadn't felt convinced I could handle an Ashes series there. Now I know that feeling was wrong," he was quoted as saying by the 'Daily Telegraph' in London.

"...With the World Cup it has been different in that I just wish I was there full stop, which in itself demonstrates progress. I believe I will play for England again, but only when the time is right," he added.

Trescothick, however, said he would not be under pressure to recover in a set timeframe. "I am sure I will reach a stage when I am fully recovered, but I will not put pressure on myself by predicting when that will be. I've been talking to a specialist on a one-to-one basis," he said.

He admitted he was not comfortable talking about his illness earlier. "There was a time when I felt too frightened to talk about it because I didn't understand it, and that's why I haven't done so... I started to worry about the smallest things, some to do with cricket and some not. Then I began to have trouble sleeping so I'd wake up tired and that made it harder to cope. It was an agonising decision, but... I have never regretted it."
