Legendary batsman Brian Lara described spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan as a world class spinner and lauded his feat of becoming highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.

"I congratulate him on his feat. His achievement is remarkable and testimony to the fact that he has been playing for so many years for Sri Lanka," Lara, who is captaining the Mumbai Champs team in the ICL, told reporters at Panchkula in Haryana.

"He is an outstanding performer," said the highest scorer in Test cricket.

The 35-year-old Lankan off-spinner took his 709th Test wicket Monday to go past former Australian leg spinner Shane Warne.

Muralitharan bowled England's Paul Collingwood for 45 on the third day of the first Test in Kandy.

"Murali is a world class spinner and a world class individual," Lara said.

Lara did not make any comparisons between Murali and Warne and only said while one was the best off spinner the other was the best leg spinner.
