 No regrets for missing Oz captaincy: Warne

Legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne's brilliant performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has enhanced his reputation as the best Test captain Australia never had, but it has not caused him to dwell on the fact he was never given the chance to lead the national team.
''I was very lucky to play under a couple of very good captains in Australia. I played under some average ones, as well. You can make your own mind up which one's which,'' Warne said.
''I played in an era of Australian cricket that was wonderful. I was vice-captain for a World Cup that we won (in 1999), I was captain for a few one-dayers. I don't have any regrets. I'd be in a straight-jacket in a padded cell if I had regrets and worried about the past.''
Warne, the captain and the coach of the Rajasthan Royals, lifted a motley assortment of local and international cricketers (and the cheapest franchise in the IPL) to the first title.
Warne, who also has captained his beloved Victoria in Australian domestic cricket and English county Hampshire, said he got a kick out of captaining the Royals.
''It was pretty satisfying, as captain-coach, to bring them together and go on and win,'' he said.
Warne will continue to work for CA as a spin-bowling mentor, in an effort to help his country ''move on'' from his own retirement and the more recent departure of Stuart MacGill.
He vested immense confidence in 25-year-old Beau Casson, and described Victorian veteran Bryce McGain as ''a ready-made leg-spinner who could walk into any team''.
''Whenever someone retires, an opportunity creates itself,'' he added. |
