He has always spoken out against female foeticide in India. Now, 'Haryana Hurricane' has taken up the challenge of storming the social menace by becoming the brand ambassador for 'Save the Girl Child' programme.
Former Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev, sources said, has given his consent to become the brand ambassador for the campaign in a letter to the government. He has also expressed his willingness to spearhead the programme.
Kapil, father of a girl, has already participated in media campaigns on the issue.
The Kapil Dev-led Indian cricket team, which won the 1983 World Cup, is in London currently to celebrate the silver jubilee of their historic triumph at the Lord's.
The entire team, barring Ravi Shastri, left India yesterday along with their spouses by a brand new Boeing 777-300 (ER) for the British capital where Sunil Gavaskar has organised a dinner to celebrate 25 years of the victory today.
Delving into the reason for approaching Kapil Dev for spearheading the campaign, sources said, besides being one of the most well known faces of the country, he also belonged to Haryana which along with Punjab is one of the states which is most affected by the scourge.
Latest official figures show that affluent families in posh areas of the country are routinely indulging in female foeticide to fulfill their quest for a male child. |
