Australian leg spin genius Shane Keith Warne arrived back from his English country cricket commitments today still determined to save his marriage.

Warne and his wife, Simone, announced their separation on June 25 after Warne's alleged involvement in several highly publicised sex scandals.

Warne today pleaded for privacy from the Australian media while he tried to settle his personal issues, saying he had spoken to his wife and children at least twice a day since they returned to Australia.

Warne said that during the recent Ashes tour he had experienced some of the worst times of his life.

"It's not an easy situation to be in. It's something I haven't experienced before in my life," Warne said in Melbourne.

"I tried to concentrate as hard as I could when I was at the cricket ground but away from that there were some tough times."

Warne said the Australian media hounded him more than the notorious British press, and urged them to give him privacy.

"Hopefully you guys will respect that and leave us alone, not following us and camping outside our house but I doubt it," he said. "I doubt whether you guys will, so that will probably make it harder."

Warne, 36, said he could be coming to the end of his dazzling international career, saying the constant travel was beginning to wear on him.

"I enjoyed living in England but I have to weigh up the whole package, the travel and so on," said Warne, Test cricket's all-time leading wicket-taker.

He will play for St. Kilda in Melbourne grade cricket this weekend before competing in next month's one-off Super Series Test match against a World XI in Sydney.

He agreed with Australia captain Ricky Ponting that Australia had not lost its standing as the best team in the world because it had lost the Ashes series.

"There are two ways of looking at it, like a heavy weight title fight if Bangladesh beat Australia in a One-Day game they'd be the best side in the world," Warne said.

"You can't really look at it like that. It's over a period of time in home and away games when you play against most countries, that's when you become the best in the world."
