NEWS ICC Champions Trophy 2006>Cricketers join hands against poverty 15th Oct 2006 22.09 IST By Agencies Cricketers of India and England along with thousands of spectators today expressed solidarity for the United Nations' Millennium Campaign against poverty. The players, officials and fans at the Sawai Mansingh stadium in Jaipur stood up before the ICC Champions Trophy outing between the two teams to support the cause as former cricketer Ravi Shastri, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador read out a pledge to start the worldwide campaign. The campaign is being backed by Indian captain Rahul Dravid , Sachin Tendulkar , filmstar Aamir Khan and musician A R Rahman. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan duly acknowledged the gesture by the cricketing community. "The International cricket council is stepping up to the crease in a wonderful way," Annan said in a statement. "It is going in to bat for a set of simple, powerful and people-centered objective that every man and women in the street can easily support and understand." The campaign would see people across the globe stand up against poverty during a 24-hour period starting today. Tendulkar appealed to fellow Indians to spare a minute from their busy schedule and observe the stand up campaign. "I am going to do that and I hope everyone will join me in it," he said in a ICC press release. ICC Chief Executive Malcolm Speed said, "through our work with UNAIDS during the past three years the ICC has been able to play a role in helping people across the world with HIV and AIDS."
