NEWS Asia Cup 2004>Sachin takes the honours for India in Asia Cup 02nd Aug 2004 22.53 IST By CricketZone Bureau Sachin Tendulkar took the honours for India in both batting and bowling in the Asia Cup tournament in Colombo even though Irfan Pathan emerged as the highest wicket taker in the six-nation meet with 14 scalps. Tendulkar accumulated 281 runs in six outings at an average 56.20 with a highest score of 82 not out. He hit three half-centuries including a 74 in the final against Sri Lanka. In bowling, his 12 wickets came at a miserly 12.25 apiece with the best being 3/21 recorded against Pakistan in the Super League stage of the competition. Left-arm seamer Pathan was the other Indian to impress in the tournament with a total haul of 14 wickets at an average of 16.28. Shoaib Malik of Pakistan emerged as the dark horse of the tournament with staggering batting and bowling figures. The 22-year-old was the lone batsman to cross the 300-run mark in the competition. He made 316 runs in five matches with a solid average of 63.2. He also proved his bowling prowess with nine wickets at an average of 14.55 with the best being three for 10. If Malik scored the highest runs in the competition, Sanath Jayasuriya had the best batting average. With 293 runs at 73.25 in six matches, the dynamic left-hander not only came out of a form slump, but also helped his side regain the Asia Cup title. Amongst the minnows, Javed Omar of Bangladesh played just two matches and hit fifties in both the innings to finish with 130 runs at an average of 65. Khurram Khan of UAE took five wickets in two matches -- against Sri Lanka and India -- at an average of 16.
