West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by 33 runs in the Indian Oil Cup tri-series cricket one-day international in Colombo on Saturday.

Revitalizing the Windies’ hopes of making it to the final of the tournament, Sri Lanka today succumbed to a middle order collapse from which the home team - despite Arnold's (59) heroic effort - could not recover.

Faced with a combined effort by the Caribbean bowlers, the Lankans fell short of the modest 227-run target set by Windies.

The West Indies batting line up had earlier notched up the runs in the stipulated 50 overs with Chanderpaul (57) and Sylvester Joseph (58) among the top scorers. The latter order, however, tottered up to 226 at the end of the 50 overs against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka were off to a confident start with openers Jayasuriya and Tharanga taking runs at will. Lanka raced along to 39 for no loss at the start of the 10th over. But then, the scene changed

Sri Lanka were two wickets down for 64 in the 15th over. And in the 19th over, when the scorecard read 73/4, the home team seemed teetering on the brink of another collapse.

With Sri Lanka 92/5 in the 25th over, Windies were smelling victory and for the first time the required run rate had crept up to 6 runs per over.

Lanka were losing a flurry of wickets with only Arnold stationed firmly at the other end. And the victory deservedly fell into the lap of the Windies.

Omari Banks was adjudged the man-of-the-match for picking up two wickets and scoring a quickfire 33 runs.

Brief scores: West Indies 226 for 7 in 50 overs (S Chanderpaul 57, S Joseph 58, U Chandana 2-49).

Sri Lanka 193 all out in 47 overs (U Tharanga 25, R Arnold 59, N Deonarine 2-18, O Banks 2-24, D Powell 2-28).
