NEWS India-South Africa Series 2006>India 'bounced off' in Durban 23rd Nov 2006 01.28 IST By Manish Kumar Seven batsmen couldn’t come to terms with the bounce of the Kingsmead pitch in Durban and churned out India's lowest score against South Africa losing the second ODI of the series by 157 runs on November 22. With the first match at the Wanderers washed off, the hosts lead the five-match series 1-0. India never looked in the hunt after Shaun Maclean Pollock struck two early blows. First in the first over of the Indian innings, the debutant Wasim Jaffer (0) edged Pollock’s delivery onto his stumps while playing away from his body. Pollock then struck in the ninth over when he had Mohammad Kaif (8) caught at backward point off a short delivery. From then onwards, Charl Langeveldt and Andre Nel kept the pressure on the Indians. In the 16th over, Langeveldt clean bowled Indian captain Rahul Dravid (18) ‘through the gate’ and from there on, the Indians found the aggression of Nel too hot to handle. Sachin Tendulkar , who today became the most capped one-day player in the world, top scored for India with a 51-ball knock of 35 before he edged a Nel delivery onto his stumps. Nel then dismissed Suresh Raina (4) and Mahendra Dhoni (14) in the 23rd over to reduce India to 83/6. Jacques Henry Kallis then took the next two wickets of Dinesh Mongia (1) and Harbhajan Singh (1) and Nel in the next over took his fourth wicket by dismissing Zaheer Khan (1) off a bouncer. Kallis finished the match by shattering the stumps of Ajit Agarkar (6). Earlier, Kallis' 14th one-day century ensured South Africa a challenging total of 248/8. Kallis nearly carried his bat through the innings, walking to the crease in the second over and staying till the close to hit an unbeaten 119 from 160 balls with 15 fours. Man of the Match Kallis received valuable support from AB de Villiers (41) with whom he put on 78 runs for the fourth wicket and there was a brief assistance from Mark Boucher (23) as well. The most mystifying question is why the Indian pacers – Zaheer, Munaf Patel , Agarkar (even Irfan Pathan and S Sreesanth didn’t do so in the Champions Trophy) cannot bowl bouncy deliveries to trouble the batsmen, why do they always resort to bowl in the channel outside the off-stump which in any case they don’t succeed in. India will be in for more humiliating defeats if their bowlers don’t take advantage of these bouncy pitches of South Africa, in other words, Indian batsmen will be sitting ducks for the South African fast bowlers in the next match as well that is in Cape Town on Sunday.
