The amateurish performance of Indian batting stalwarts in the vanquished one-day series against South Africa was amply reflected in the averages, dominated clearly by the hosts in all the departments.

Mahendra Dhoni had the best average among Indian batsmen although the figures were hardly impressive. He averaged 34.75 from four matches with an aggregate of 139 runs.

Sachin Tendulkar , who managed a 55 off 97 balls in the ODI in Centurion on Sunday, aggregated 93 runs for an average of just 23.25 from four innings.

Virender Shewag fared even worse, accumulating 29 runs from three matches at an average of 9.66.

Mohammad Kaif , who played in three games, could muster only 28 runs for an average of 9.33.

Jacques Henry Kallis topped the batting charts with a staggering average of 84 and a run aggregate of 168 from four matches.

Herschelle Gibbs , AB de Villiers and Andrew Hall all crossed the 50-mark in averages, underlining their superiority over their fancied rivals in the five-match series which India lost 4-0. The first game in Johannesburg was washed out.

Among the bowlers, Shaun Maclean Pollock , declared man of the match and the series, was clearly on top with an average of 8.30 and an economy rate of 2.30.

Zaheer Khan fared reasonably well for the Indians on his comeback with an average 29.84 and an economy rate of 5.42.
