The Indian team left Mumbai for the World Cup in West Indies with high hopes of regaining the cricket's showpiece title after a gap of nearly a quarter century.

The team led by Rahul Dravid was seen off at the Mumbai airport late Wednesday night by BCCI officials and fans.

The team would reach Jamaica and commence their preparations for their opening Group B encounter on March 17 against Bangladesh after playing warm-up games against The Netherlands (March 6) and Cup hosts West Indies (March 9) at Trelawny.

The league opener is slated to be held at India's happy hunting Test ground - Queen's Park Oval in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. India are to play their other two Group B ties at this venue on March 19 (v Bermuda) and March 23 (v Sri Lanka).

The top two teams from each of the four preliminary groups are to advance to the Super Eight stage commencing on March 27.

India have won the game's biggest prize once in 1983 when the tournament was held in England.

The country had reached the semi-finals of the event twice - in 1987 and 1996 both in the sub continent - and were the losing finalists four years ago in South Africa.

The World Cup squad: Rahul Dravid (Captain), Sachin Tendulkar (vice-captain), Virender Shewag , Sourav Ganguly , Robin Uthappa , Yuvraj Singh , Dinesh Kaarthick , Mahendra Dhoni , Harbhajan Singh , Anil Kumble , Zaheer Khan , Ajit Agarkar , Munaf Patel , Irfan Pathan and S Sreesanth . Coach: Greg Chappell.
