Profile
Irfan Pathan first shot to fame when he took 9/16 in India’s opening match against Bangladesh in the Asian under-19 championship in Pakistan. Promptly called to tour Australia, Matthew Hayden became his first Test wicket. He added the prized scalps of Steve Waugh and Adam Gilchrist in the fourth Test at Sydney and became the toast of the entire nation. And now the left arm seam bowler from Baroda, who considers the legendary Wasim Akram as his idol, is now considered by many, with reason, as the most talented swing and seam bowler to emerge from India since Kapil Dev. He played a significant role in India’s triumph over Pakistan in both the Test and one-day series, by bringing the ball into the right hander consistently. His batting reserves are expected to yield significant lower-order, perhaps even lower-middle-order, runs in the future.
